Akashi is also co-chairman of the Tokyo Forum for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, a global panel of independent experts set up by the Japanese government to assess the dangers of nuclear war after the Indian and Pakistani tests last year. The Forum issued its report in August.
