Abstract
The Solar Electric Propulsion System (Seps) may make it back into NASA's 1981 budget, but if it does, something else will probably have to come out.Seps, the ion‐propulsion system that is cheaper to operate and more fuel efficient than conventional propulsion systems, is needed for comet, asteroid, and extended planetary missions. It was omitted from the President's original 1981 budget request, however, which set off waves of disappointment and protest among space scientists.
