Abstract

The basic technique which Lenz uses to structure his novel, an extended variation of the Rahmenerziihlung, gives him the opportunity to analyze contrapuntally the two worlds with which he is always concerned: the Nazi interim and the postwar period of democratization and Wirtschaftswunder. This confrontation has always been more or less explicit in Lenz's work, but here for the first time the present in which the narrator is writing provides an expanded horizon for the author's most penetrating analysis thus far of his basic theme: the nature and use of guilt.
