Abstract

Brazilian popular prayers are structured in traditional formulas that expresses mystical attitudes and collective representations. They are addressed to the Catholic saints and ask for love, marriage, money, physical and spiritual defense, employment and cures of diseases. The last are characterized by the narrative of disease’s origins and by the strategies of cure. Their history shows: 1) Permanence in front of repression alike: the Catholic Inquisition from 16 th to 18 th Centuries; the foreign travelers; the folklorists and Brazilian ecclesiastics since 19 th Century who considered them as fruit of the ignorance; in the Penal Codes of 1898 and 1940, which the use of cure prayers is crime. 2) Passage from the oral to writing since 19th Century. Nowadays, they are published by the cultural industry in popular books to solve daily problems, maintaining the traditional formula.
