Abstract

The concept of narcissism has received renewed interest, especially among the psycho- analysts. In the forthcoming DSM III, a new person- ality disorder has been added to the present DSM II diagnosis, namely, Narcissistic Personality Dis- order. Although there has been rather general agree- ment among the leading authors concerning the characteristics of narcissism and the Narcissistic Per- sonality Disorder, scant attention has been given to relate either the generic notions (narcissism) to al- cohol, or the diagnostic entry (Narcissistic Person- ality Disorder) to the alcoholic. The present article makes this attempt by: (a) the proposed definition for alcoholism, (b) clarification of diagnosis and(c) clin- ical examples. Rather, the individual's interpersonal relation- ships must be observed. In essence, Kohut holds that a narcissistic personality-disordered person is one who has problems regulating self-esteem and maintaining the self-esteem at normal levels. In the forthcoming DSM III, a new personality disorder has been added to the present DSM II; namely, Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
