Abstract

For nanostructuring PEFC electrocatalysts using oxides stable under strongly acidic conditions, freeze drying is applied as an effective fabrication procedure for highly dispersing SnO2 nanoparticles of a few nanometers in diameter, on relatively-stable conductive framework in the electrocatalyst layers. Platinum catalysts are deposited on SnO2 nanocrystals on an atomic level by applying a chemical procedure for preparing oxide-core Pt-shell electrocatalysts. Their high-resolution STEM images and preliminary electrochemical results are reported, and remaining issues are discussed.
