Abstract

Preparation of self-cleaning surfaces based on lanthanide modified titanium dioxide nanoparticles has rarely been reported. In the present work, gadolinium doped titanium dioxide thin films (x mol Gd3+-TiO2 where x=0.000, 0.005, 0.008, 0.010, 0.020 and 0.030mol) were synthesized by sol–gel method and deposited using doctor-blade method. These films were characterized by studying their structural, optical and electrical properties. Doping with gadolinium decreases the band gap energy and increase conductivity of thin films. The photo self-cleaning activity in term of quantitative determination of the active oxidative species (OH) produced on the thin film surfaces was evaluated using fluorescent probe method. The results show that, the highly active thin film is the 0.020 Gd3+-TiO2. The structural, morphology, optical, electrical and photoactivity properties of Gd3+-TiO2 thin films make it promising surfaces for self-cleaning application. Mineralization of commercial textile dye (Remazol Red RB-133, RR) and durability using 0.020Gd3+-TiO2 film surface was studied.
