Abstract
As an entry in Oxford University Press’s Very Short Introductions series, the target audience for Bence Nanay’s book are people unfamiliar with the field of aesthetics. The book covers many of the topics we would expect an introduction to aesthetics to cover (beauty, pleasure, disinterestedness, taste, judgment, normativity, aesthetic experience, etc.), and it does so in a breezy, accessible, and engaging way. It is filled with illuminating examples and personal anecdotes that bring the field of aesthetics to life for the reader and would be a useful text for undergraduates and casual readers. In Chapter 1, Nanay sets up the problem that will occupy the next two chapters: namely, why some experiences have the special character of being aesthetic and others do not.
