Abstract
The article contains introductory information about the features of the narrative analysis of a work of fiction, which formed the basis for the narrative analysis of the story of N. V. Gogol "Portrait". The article was chosen for analysis not by chance, since the work is programmatic and contains the main thoughts of the writer about the tasks of art and the artist's responsibility to the world. The narr ative analysis of the story allows us to hear the author's word more clearly.
