Abstract

'n Sosiologlewoordeboek Islis a Dictionary of Sociology. The South African Dictionary of SociologylSosiologiewoordeboek (1983) is a bilingual dictionary comprising 7000 English and 8000 Afrikaans words. An evaluation of its design, content and usefulness takes cognizance of the ‘language situation’ of South African sociology, requirements of technical conceptualization and the practical needs of potential users. The limited functionality of a non-explanatory dictionary is pointed out; the selection of terms is criticized for being too wide, inconsistent in its coverage of specialized fields and lacking in sociological distinctiveness. It is concluded that a much sharper sociological focus and a realization of the inherent potential of Afrikaans could have resulted in a more meaningful and useful publication.S. Afr. J. Sociol. 1984, 15(2): 65–70
