Abstract

A study is presented of the relationship among the stock removal by honing, the crosshatch angle, the honing speed and the honing resistance, by applying honing to the work piece S 55 C through both constant feed expansion system and constant pressure expansion system, and obtained the following results : (1) In applying honing by both grindstone expansion systems, the crosshatch angle greatly influences the stock removal.(2) By the constant feed expansion system, the sum of the grindstone wear and the stock removal equals the amount of cutting and feeding.(3) A close relationship exists between the stock removal by honing and the honing resistance : The stock removal increases as the contact pressure between the grindstone and the work, the thrust, and the peripheral force are increased.(4) Regarding the grindstone expansion force versus the thrust, the peripheral force, and the actual honing speed, a linear relationship is noticed between them when the grindstone expansion speed is in between 50 and 200 μ/min. The same tendency is noticed in both of the grindstone expansion systems.(5) The cutting mechanisms of the grindstone grains are essentially equal between the constant feed expansion system and the constant pressure expansion system.
