Abstract

A capsule velocity control system with braking zone and control valves was developed for the precise control of arrival velocity at a station before loading or unloading of transported material. The braking zone is required for the reduction of the capsule velocity and is located between the air outlet and the pipeline end, sealed by a preexisting capsule. As the capsule enters the braking zone, the front pressure increases and functions as a brake. The control valves consist of the accelerating valve at the air outlet and the braking valve at the pipeline end and are automatically operated such that the measured capsule velocity pattern in the braking zone agrees with that of predetermined velocity. The followings were confirmed through experiments by the use of a commercial pipeline system.1) The amount of dispersion in values of the leak coefficient of capsules can be estimated from the control limits of dimensions of the seal plates in the manufacturing process.2) The amount of dispersion in values of the travelling resistance coefficient can be estimated from measured values for some sampled capsules.3) This velocity control system can be designed by using the mathematical simulation model based on the following assumptions.a) The volume of air changes not adiabatically but isothermally.b) The propagation time of the pressure wave and the length of the capsule are negligible.4) The system fulfills the intended function in the unsteady state at the restart of the pipeline as well as in the steady state under normal conditions.
