Abstract

A novel quadruple birefringent depolarizer is designed for the depolarization of monochromatic linearly polarized light.Using the idea of superposition of beams for simplification, the expressions of degree of depolarization(D)for forward and reverse application is derived. It can be shown by the expressions that the Dof forward application changes periodically with the vibration azimuth angle(VAA)of incident linearly polarized light and incident angle. However,it is independence of the VAA as the incident angle takes some certain values. The Dof reverse application is 100% which is independent of the VAA and the incident angle.Sample of quartz is made to validate the theory richly.Using 405nm diode laser, the Dof forward application as the incident angle is 3.7°is over 99.25%.And that of reverse application is over 99. 21%,which is coincided with the theory.
