Abstract

DPG1, a high performance gear steel, has been developed. The new steel contains about 0.5 mass% of silicon and 2.7 mass% of chromium, both of which improve resistance to temper softening. DPG1 shows excellent pitting resistance and wear resistance, and has fatigue strength and impact strength equivalent to conventional carburizing steels such as SCr420H. Cold-formability and machinability of DPG1 are adequate for manufacturing gears because of its ordinary hardness after normalizing.
