Abstract

The reliability of a newly devised serodiagnosis test kit aiming at more simple procedure with smaller sample volumes for detection of circulating adult heartworm antigen (enzyme immunoassay), was compared with that of a conventional kit. Forty-one of 42 heartworm-freedogs were identified correctly with both kits (specificity 97.6%). In 37 dogs with unmicrofilaremic infection, sensitivity of the new kit (45.9%) was not different from that of the conventional one (43.2%). Dogs with immature worm infection were negative with both the kits. In 35 microfilaremic dogs, detection errors of the new and conventional kits were 1 and 2 dogs (sensitivity: 97.1% and 94.2%), respectively.
