Abstract

The correlation of epithelial dysplasia with the expression of TGF-α was evaluated in oral leukoplakia. For that purpose, the expression of TGF-α and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was examined immunohistochemically in thirty cases of tongue leukoplakia with epithelial dysplasia (mild dysplasia: 11 cases, moderate dysplasia: 10 cases, and severe dysplasia: 9 cases). In addition, the expression of these molecules in normal tongue epithelium and leukoplakia without epithelial dysplasia was also investigated. The results revealed that TGF-α was scarcely stained in normal epithelium. Whereas, in leukoplakia it was expressed in cells above the basal cell layer. PCNA was distributed chiefly in the basal cell layer in normal epithelium, while it was more widely distributed in leukoplakia. Both PCNA and TGF-α positivities have an increasing tendency in accordance with the grade of epithelial dysplasia.
