Abstract

Who corrects MEDLINE indexing errors and when? Here the author presents three cases of incorrectly indexed citations: one in MeSH and two in journal titles. Following up these three errors, it has been found: 1) NLM, the producer of MEDLINE, puts correction tapes out monthly and distributes them to MEDLARS centers outside the United States and other service providers. NLM loads the correction tapes monthly to keep its own file correct. 2) The Japan Information Center for Science and Technology (JICST), a MEDLARS center, receives the correction tapes from NLM once a year, and reloads them annually, usually in July. 3) DIALOG, Inc., a service provider of MEDLINE, receives the correction tapes monthly, but loads them at the annual file maintenance each December.
