Abstract

* Since the second oil crisis, worldwide interest in substitute energy resources is on the increase and above all utilization of biomass energy is especially highlighted.* In Japan, a technical development and research association has been set up to implement a 7 year biomass project starting in 1980.* The pulp and paper industry is the existing largest biomass industry and has longstanding experiences in this field such as production of alcohol and feed yeast from sulfite pulping waste liquor in its past.* As for the problems of our industry connected with this in the future, it is hoped that R & D activities in order to enforce comprehensive utilization of wood including substitution of biomass energy for traditional energy resources as well as active exploitation of nonwood paper-making raw material fibres will be promoted.
