Abstract

We encountered several problems when selecting non-Japanese books for the core collection of the Academic Information Center of The Jikei University School of Medicine. 1) The members of the book choice committee were not familiar with all fields. 2) The book purchase budget was greatly decreased because of a rise in the cost of foreign journals. Accordingly, we selected a minimum number of non-Japanese textbooks with the following procedure. 1) We made a list of titles by referring to the Brandon list, MeSH, Core Collection, and Morton. 2) We carried out a questionnaire survey of medical school departments and the library directory committee. 3) We solicited opinions from all users via an intranet. With this process, 185 core textbooks in 34 fields were selected. When a revised edition of a title is published, we will purchase it first.
