Abstract
Schwannomas arising from the hypostatic cranial nerve origin occasionally occur in the parapharyngeal space. These are a benign tumors caused by proliferation of neoplastic Schwann cells. However, tumor enlargement or surgical procedures may induce paralysis of the nerve of origin. Furthermore, a schwannoma in the parapharyngeal space can cause paralysis of nerves other than the nerves of origin. This event is attributed to the anatomical complexity of the parapharyngeal space. We report herein on a case of schwannoma of the vagus nerve origin, which caused only hypoglossal nerve paralysis.
