Abstract

This siliconizing experiment is carried out by packing the low carbon steel or high carbon chromium steel in a mixture of silicon carbide and ammonium chloride at the temperature of 800∼1100°.In this siliconizing experiment, the rate of diffusion depends on the temperature, the time and the amount of the ammonium chloride. The exact mechanism of this reaction is not clear. But it is believed that the decomposition of ammonium chloride liberates the silicon chlorides from the silicon carbide in the gassy form, and the silicon chloride into the steel to be treated.
