Abstract

For the period between 1971 and 1990, 1192 foreign articles on brain death were obtained from the MEDLINE, and 1136 Japanese articles on this theme were found in the JMEDICINE for the 1981 to 1990 period. The following results were obtained: 1) The number of Japanese articles on brain death and organ transplantation has increased in recent years. 2) “Sygeplejersken (Denmark), ” “Lancet” and “JAMA” were found to be ranked the first, second and third journals, respectively, in publishing articles on brain death. 3) According to the geographic location of publication, a number of articles in Northern Europe in which brain death is legislated were obtained. 4) According to the number of descriptions, the number of articles detailing “Organprocurement” has been increasing rapidly in recent years. 5) With regard to items for evaluation of brain death, the number of descriptions concerning cerebral blood flow arrest, flat brain waves, auditory brainstem response and brainstem reflex disappearance was found to have increased because of the development of medical care instruments and acceptance of the concept of brainstem death in recent years.
