Abstract

A series of observations on the level of copper and zinc in the sea water and oyster have been made in relation to “Green Oyster” occured in Miyako Bay in 1969. Concentrations of Cu and Zn in surface water of the Bay were found to be on an average 30 μg/l and 100 μg/l, respectively. These values exceeded the criteria levels for fisheries. It was observed throughout the year that those in water of middle and bottom layers were lower than in surface water. The levels of copper and zinc in soft part of the cultured oyster were 161 mg/kg and 1, 540 mg/kg, respectively in October 1969 when “Green Oyster” appeared. Time course observation showed, however, that both levels tend to be decreasing and reached to a background level by February 1970. It was interesting to note that the uptake of Cu and Zn by oyster was significantly higher in surface water layer than in bottom layer.
