Abstract

The lapping has been used experientially for finishing method for higher roundness of cylindrical axes. But, there are very few reports about the principle of the finishing method. This report presents the characteristics of the changing process of the cylindrical forms and the characteristics of the combinations between the workpiece and lap. The lap is tightened in step with lapping. So the form of the lap is deformed. This deformation is closely related to the finished form of workpiece. A significant disadvantage is pointed out in the conventional lap. With the lap which has three slits, the ellipse is not finished to the true circle. Here the new kind of lap is proposed. The figure of new lap is like an internal gear, and the lapping face is the tooth crest. The teeth are movable in the radius direction. The out-of-roundness of the workpiece finished by this new lap shows a rapid decrease, no matter what the initial form is. Moreover, when the positions of teeth of the lap are suitably orientated, the polygonal cross section of the cylinder is finished to the desired forms, such as true circle, ellipse and so on.
