Abstract

Activities of serum enzymes were examined in 60 calves (41 Japanese Black and 19 Aberdeen Angus) 10 to 100 days of age kept with calves suffering from leukomyoma in the same barns.A marked increase in GOT, GPT, CPK, and LDH was observed in many calves. A very low level of serum tocopherol was found in some calves. These findings made it clear that there weremany calves with a subclinical type of muscle disturbance.In these calves, medication with a-tocopherol was so effective that the serum enzyme activities returned to a normal range within 2 weeks after injection. It showed a further preventive effect. The dams of these calves were found to have been fed a ration containing markedly concentrations of tocopherol and selenium.
