Abstract

A new tool dynamometer which indicates two-components of cutting force is described here. An elastic cylinder, which connects a cutting tool with a tool holder, bends in proportion with and in the direction of the cutting force. The deflection of the cylinder is magnified by a bar and separated in vertical and horizontal directions. These two deflections, which indicate vertical and horizontal components of the cutting force, are more magnified by levers and Eden's twin strips and recorded on soot-coated paper, which is rolled on a drum and rotated by a synchronous motor. The characteristics of this dynamometer are as follows : -1. By coinciding the cutting edge of cutting tool with the center line of cylinder, there will be no interference between the two components of cutting force indicated.2. As the cylinder is fairly rigid and has no sliding part, this dynamometer can be used even in the case of high speed cutting with sintered carbide tool. The deflection of tool is 0.47 μ/kg for vertical force and 0.30 μ/kg for horizontal force.3. The accuracy is less than 2 kg for the tube with capacity of about 200 kg (this is varied easily by varying the dimensions of cylinder).4. Alternating force of frequency up to about 8 cycle/sec. is accurately recorded.5. As the mechanism is so simple, it is very easy to use in workshops and to maintain its accuracy.
