Abstract

This paper presents an image-based method for quantifying sediment transport under highly concentrated sediment-laden flows in laboratory flumes. The method is capable of simultaneously obtaining sediment concentration and transport velocity from sediment particle images to evaluate spatial distributions of sediment fluxes at high resolution. The concentration measurement is based on a pre-calibrated relationship with light attenuation, while the velocity measurement is done through PIV. It was found from a simple verification test that sediment fluxes can be measured with up to 10% error unless sediment concentration is so high that traceable particle patterns disappear from the images. A feasibility study suggests that further extension of the method for higher concentration is made possible with help of a stereoscope.
