Abstract
It is the purpose of this study to elucidate the mechanism how cracks arise at the local buckling portion of steel members. The authors conducted alternating bending tests with square-shaped steel tubes. The strain hysteresis at the steel tube's corner where cracks should arise was measured. Then, with test pieces cut from the same tube, we conducted alternating tensile-compression tests which were controled by the strain hysteresis measured at the tube's cracked portion, so as to know the stress hysteresis at the portion. After skeltonizing the stress-strain curves obtained by means of the way above mentioned, we found that cracks arose when the strain had reached the material's uniform elongation.
