Abstract

Abstract This article considers the presence of a vocabulary of mysteries in the late antique laws collected in the Theodosian Code. The analysis shows the common use of some traditional words in a new meaning in order to define Christianity and defend its identity against other religions: not only the traditional mystery cults, but also the heretics. This vocabulary presents concepts and ancient religious ideas transformed into voces mediae, that can be used by religious communities in the conflicts of the age.
