Abstract
In both hemorrhagic and endotoxic shock, a diminished venous return is probably responsible for the decreased cardiac output. Although the heart eventually fails in both types of shock, it is unclear whether cardiac failure is responsible for the irreversibility of the condition. Also, it is unknown whether alterations of myocardial metabolism precede cardiac failure and, if so, whether they are due to or simply a reflection of myocardial hypoxia.
