Abstract

To determine the writing ability of students in my research class each year, I use the first assignment learn why they enrolled in the course. In past years, I had mandated that traditional headings of name, class, and date appear at the top of each submission. This year, in a moment of madness, I told my charges that all responses would be anonymous. Thus inspired, my new students handed in the traditional to learn write a research paper and because I need the course for college. Among the wide variety of returns were several that caused me momentary pangs of doubt about my teaching techniques and my reputation after twenty years in the classroom. Here are some of the more startling submissions:
