Abstract

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TC), also referred to as apical ballooning syndrome, is a unique acute reversible cardiomyopathy that accounts for approximately 2% of patients initially suspected of having an acute coronary syndrome. Chest pain and dyspnea are the most common presenting symptoms. The symptoms and signs are similar to those seen in other acute cardiac conditions characterized by acute myocardial ischemia or heart failure. Therefore, I consider TC to be an important differential diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction in patients with unobstructed coronary arteries. This is particularly so for postmenopausal women because over 90% of cases occur in older females.
