Abstract
Owing to their widespread use and occurrence in the environment, and their toxicological hazards, the group vinyl chloride (VCM), vinylidene chloride (VDC), acrylonitrile (ACN), styrene (STY), butadiene (BUT), and chlorobutadiene (CBD) form an important category of industrial chemicals. These so-called monomers are extensively used in the production of homo- and copolymeric materials utilized in the manufacture of many and various products, such as food packaging (VCM, VDC, STY), synthetic textile fibers (ACN, VDC), synthetic rubber goods (CBD, BUT), resins, and elastomers (VCM, VDC, BUT, etc.) and, according to published reports, world annual production varies from 7000 million kg for STY to 300 million kg for chlorobutadiene. All of them are gaseous or volatile and are generally poorly soluble in water.
