Abstract

This article describes several examples of the many music therapy approaches with aphasia patients. It also deals with the role of music therapy in neurological rehabilitation, in particular, it examines the advantages and disadvantages of either working towards functional or psychotherapeutic aims. The article then offers an insight into a multi disciplinary project that was developed by one music therapist and a team of speech therapists in a clinic for neurological rehabilitation, the Brandenburgklinik Bernau. Based on Melodic Intonation Therapy, which was developed in the 1970s, the team set up a therapeutic approach whose aim is to support speech rehabilitation in stroke patients with the help of music. This approach takes into account functional aims as well as emotional support.
