Abstract

the Independent Music Teachers Forum of the Music Teachers National Association in 1980, the results showed a great disparity in fees charged, from fifty cents to $25 per lesson. Most, however, fell within the $6 to $13 range. In the November 1981 issue of Clavier, Dean Elder reported an average of $11 per hour among in the fifteen teachers he surveyed. Opportunities for the private music teacher are increasing. With the cutbacks in federal funding, many public schools are eliminating or seriously curtailing their music programs. The private teacher offers exposure for those who wish to pursue their interest in music. Many community colleges, arts councils, senior citizens centers, YMCAs, and retirement homes now offer classes in music. For the imaginative teacher, the opportunities for teaching an ever-expanding population of interested musicians certainly are present today. The independent teacher can opt to teach private lessons only, group lessons, or various combinations of the two.
