Abstract

The emphasis on the muscular ideal has been growing in Western culture for the past two decades, a reflection of (and a potential contribution to) the greater drive for muscularity among men and boys today. This article examines the psychosocial and behavioral correlates of the drive for muscularity, as well as the way muscularity is portrayed in the media and the potential clinical outcomes associated with being too focused on achieving the muscular ideal. While this article will be focused mostly on men and boys, the correlates and outcomes of the drive for muscularity in women and girls will also be examined where the literature exists.
