Abstract

Solid waste in coast and ocean becomes crucial problem because its effect to environment and public health directly. The proper waste management is required to handle coast waste. Indifference and incompetence of government to resolve problems of waste management caused degradation in environmental quality which is make inconveniences for living and will lead to the decreasing of public health quality. One of coast areas in Indonesia that experienced waste increasing is Lengkang Kecil Island. This study aims to know the existing condition of solid waste management based on community in coastal area, which is Lengkang Kecil Island. This study was qualitative study. The data were collected by interview, observation and literature review. Study's research showed that waste management in Lengkang Kecil Island is not qualified into standard method. There are only four of six functional elements in waste management that are conducted in this island. Those elements are waste generation, storage, collection and processing and recovery. Waste management in Lengkang Kecil Island needs to be improved in order to avoid further impacts like public health problems.
