P. Abstract The relations between the structural, kinematic, and chemical properties of elliptical galaxies in different environments are studied, and it is found that, at a given luminosity or mass, Virgo ellipticals are more compact than Coma ellipticals. Given a universal M/L ratio, a relative Virgo-Coma distance modulus of 3.80 + or - 0.06 mag is derived, corresponding to an infall velocity of 205 + or - 40 km/s. The M/L ratio is significantly correlated with luminosity for both cluster and field ellipticals, and is proportional to L exp 0.3, though after correction for a possible systematic error in the RC2 radii, the power would increase from 0.3 to 0.5-0.6. A principal component analysis indicates that both cluster and field ellipticals are a two-parameter family in the L-sigma-Mg2 space, the second parameter being dominated by Mg2, and it is suggested that the residual scatter of Mg2 about the Mg2-L or Mg2-sigma fits is intrinsic.
