Abstract

A concept of a multi-track submicron-width head for high track density perpendicular magnetic recording is discussed. The measurement with a high resolution Magnetic Force Microscopy proved that the trackwidth of 0.4 /spl mu/m and linear density of 200 kFRPI was written with a newly developed narrow track single pole head. Fundamental experiment for read/write performance showed that C/N ratio of low density signal exceeded 30 dB; D/sub 50/ was 100 kFRPI. The potential for areal density of 6 Gbit/inch/sup 2/ was estimated with the submicron width multi-track recording and inherent high linear density of perpendicular magnetic recording. The head configuration for high areal density multi-track recording, which consists of a submicron trackwidth write-heads and a high linear resolution read-head, has been proposed. >
