Abstract

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polyethylene (PE) foams are extensively used as packaging materials for home appliances. In this study, multiple loading and unloading behavior of EPS and PE foam is experimentally analyzed under uniaxial compression. A method for the calculation of the load and deformation is presented. It is found that PE is resilient and EPS shows a more crushable behavior. Multiple loading and unloading behavior of EPS and PE is also studied using finite elements. The results of finite elements are compared to the results of tests.
