Abstract
This chapter discusses the multiphase flow model that can be used for the simulation of both Diesel and direct injection gasoline (DGI) swirl injectors. Diesel injectors are simulated as two-phase flow systems, where both liquid and vapor created by cavitation are considered. Flow is simulated up to the exit of the injection nozzle. DGI swirl injector is simulated as a three-phase flow system where fuel, fuel vapor, and air outside the nozzle are taken into account. Calculated three-dimensional results of the flow in realistic geometries for diesel injector and DGI swirl injector are also provided. The model is based on the multifluid formulation for multiphase flows. The model can be used to simulate flows in injectors under conditions that can be observed in internal combustion engines.
