Multimedia curricula, courses, and knowledge modules

Abstract

At Multimedia ’95, the Third ACM International Multimedia Conference and Exposition, the SIGMM Education Committee (MMEC) was launched. As co-chairs of this committee, we invite individuals, institutions, and associations to join with us in assisting the international cc)mmunity interested in education and training in the multimedia field. MMEC wishes to help the field by providing guidelines for curricula, courses, and knowledge modules. These are likely to be of interest to universities, colleges, and training organizations. They should help prepare students for jobs and advanced study, thus facilitating research, development, and practice. At this core, the multimedia field is interdisciplinary. We believe there will be an increasing number of new colleges arising that reflect this diversity. There will also be interdisciplinary degree programs, as well as specializations in multimedia that arise in a variety of departments, including but not limited to: computer science, computer engineering, education, communication studies, business, and the arts. In some cases there will be interdisciplinary or deparkmentrun survey courses. In other cases, various courses (e.g., architecture, database management, information retrieval, networking, operating systems, programming languages) will be enhanced with units about multimedia concerns.
