Abstract

We have made a detailed study of the temperature dependence of the optical absorption of the parity- and spin-forbidden transitions $^{1}T_{2g}({t}_{2g}{e}_{g})$ in Ni${\mathrm{Br}}_{2}$ and $^{1}T_{2g}$, $^{1}E_{g}({{t}_{2g}}^{2})$ in Ni${\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$. It is proposed that the oscillator strength magnitude, its temperature dependence, and the band shape of both transitions are due to a strong electron-magnon interaction.
