One reason is the knowledge of early childhood educators on what children need for future academic success in a play-based and child-centered program and not present in an early childhood program led by teachers and worksheets. One of the most extensive studies takes place in Washington, DC, D.C. over the past 5 years finding children in academic-oriented classes decreased in skills over the few years to end up substantially behind their peers, and Kathy (2016) found a cause for this, namely child-centered (play based); teacher centered (direct academic instruction such as memorization and worksheets); and combination.
