Abstract

ABSTRACT Portuguese Lamiaceae were investigated for nutlet mucilage release. Nutlets of 55 taxa were weighed before and after 24 h of hydration and observed under a stereomicroscope. Weight increase was statistically analysed and showed significant differences among the subfamilies, genera and species. Mucilage release was observed in the Nepetoideae only (51.6%) and mucilage variation proved the homoplasy of the character in the subfamily. Three new cases of mucilage release were reported: Prunella x intermedia, Thymus caespititius and Thymus villosus. Mucilage reaction to water is briefly described.
