Abstract
High-field, variable-temperature Mossbauer and magnetic susceptibility data have been recorded for the synthetic five-coordinate ferrous heme [Fe(TPP)(OH)]—as its polycrystalline salt [Na(dibenzo-18-crown-6)(THF)2][Fe(TPP)OH)]—(TPP=tetraphenylporphyrinate, OH= hydroxide). This compound is a model for the P-460 center of hydroxylamine oxidoreductase from Nitrosomonas europae, an ammonia-oxidizing bacterium. An analysis of the data suggests that the extra d-electron of the iron is located in an oblate orbital. The data are also consistent with an intermolecular spin-coupling between pairs of iron atoms. Although a crystal structure is not available for this compound, a structure determination for a closely related compound is consistent with a pairwise iron-iron exchange but does not rule out more complex schemes.
