Abstract

Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) activity in the pituitaries of albino rats did not change following the administration of morphine, decreased slightly with Nembutal, but fell markedly after the injection of both morphine and Nembutal. The additional use of ether did not alter pituitary MSH levels in rats which had received morphine. Treatment of rats with Nembutal, morphine and ether before administration of MSH-release inhibiting factor (MIF) resulted in a sensitive bioassay with little variability.
