Abstract
ABSTRACTThis article outlines one approach to bringing movement into a college-level modern dance history course taught in a traditional lecture hall to a mix of students who are either new to dance or pursuing a dance minor. Three examples are given of exercises that bring embodied learning into the dance history course, with special emphasis on an exercise that can be done inside a lecture hall despite the lack of open space. The article centers on the following question: How does one teach about a form that is ephemeral and rooted in somatic experience in a format that feels static and unchanging?
