Abstract

Foliar sprays of ethionine decreased the incidence of potato common scab, caused by soilborne Streptomyces scabies, in glasshouse and field. Ethionine penetrated leaves very slowly but its alkyl esters did so rapidly. After penetration, ethionine was found in all parts of the plants, the concentrations in tubers being within the range of EC50's found for ethionine against S. scabies in culture. Ethionine probably acts as a phloem-moving systemic fungicide. Closely related compounds and other amino acids were inactive in vitro and in vivo.
