Abstract

In this paper the influence of the deformation or structural failure in motorcycle accident reconstruction is addressed. Accident reconstruction is important for legal processes and road safety to determine the conditions and events that led to the accident. For the reconstruction of the accident, the software PC-Crash is used with multibody models for the vehicle and driver. The question addressed in this work is how the deformation from the collision affects the results of the reconstruction process and if a deformed multibody model of the vehicle should be considered in the simulations. Seven different real accidents are analyzed and the accident reconstruction is performed using deformed and non-deformed models. The inclusion of the deformations in the multibody model did not reveal different results in the computational simulations comparing with the multibody model without considering the deformations. It is expected that the post-impact movement of a motorcycle multibody model is not considerably influenced by the consideration of the frontal deformations. Failure analysis revealed to be an important complement of accident reconstruction when the accident is or not connect to failure of some parts.
